Lens hoods – frequently asked questions

A lens hood costs little and offers two benefits: less stray light in the image and mechanical protection for the lens.

What is a lens hood?

An attachment that fits on the front of the lens. It prevents side light from entering the lens and causing reflections or loss of contrast.

What are its real benefits?

It reduces stray light and improves contrast. At the same time, it protects the front lens from scratches, bumps, and fingerprints.

Why do lens hoods look so different?
  • Round hoods for standard and telephoto lenses
  • Tulip or petal hoods for wide-angle lenses, so the corners are not darkened
  • Metal or rubber versions, depending on preference and weight
How do I find the right one?

The decisive factor is the filter thread diameter of your lens, for example 49 mm or 52 mm. It is usually indicated on the front of the lens or in the manual.

Does every lens hood fit every lens?

No. It must mechanically fit the thread and optically suit the focal length. If you are unsure, ask us via the contact form.

Is it also worth it in cloudy weather?

Yes. Even without sun, there is stray light from streetlights, windows, or reflections – and the mechanical protection remains regardless.

Can I use the lens hood with a flash?

Only to a limited extent. With the built-in camera flash, the hood can cast a shadow. With an external flash, the risk is significantly lower.

Can I combine the lens hood with a filter?

Usually yes, as long as the threads and dimensions fit. With multiple parts stacked together, the risk of vignetting increases.

What do we check?

Material, fit, and visible wear. The lens hood itself is included; additional parts only if they are mentioned in the product title.

How do we assess the condition?

What the condition classes for accessories mean and what we check: How we check accessories.

How long does shipping take?

You can find shipping times and payment methods under Shipping and Payment.

How do I return an item?

You can request a return on the Returns page. Regardless of this, your statutory right of withdrawal applies.
