What we check on a light meter before it goes online – and what we don’t.

Example photo: Gossen Digisix, not your item. Tap or click a dot to see what we check there.

Example photo: Belichtungsmesser Gossen Digisix, von vorn, with dots at the points we check. The checks are also listed as text on this page.

What we check

  • Display, analog or digital: clearly legible
  • Controls: buttons and dials work and can be operated smoothly
  • Measurement response: the meter responds to light and the readings are plausible

What we don’t check

  • Accuracy compared to a reference measuring device
  • Compatibility with specific camera models or accessories

This means: we check that it measures and the readings are plausible – not whether the device operates with an accuracy of one-third of a stop. In older electronic models, the measuring cell can age.
